You buy organic. You are mindful of your food choices. You check ingredient labels. You avoid unnecessary chemicals in your meals and your cleaning products.
But when it comes to water, the one thing you use dozens of times a day throughout your home, it’s often assumed to be fine, so home water doesn’t always receive the same level of attention.
Substances such as chlorine, fluoride, and newer chemicals like PFAS don’t always affect taste or smell. Yet water isn’t only something we drink. It’s also something the body comes into contact with through showering, washing, and everyday use, which is why some people choose to look more closely over time, particularly when it comes to young children, sensitive skin, or changes they notice in their hair or scalp.
If any of this feels familiar, you’re not alone.
That’s exactly why I wrote this book-for everyday families who want clarity and understanding, not sales pitches.
You’ve probably had questions about your water — maybe for years. Questions like why it smells like a pool, why your shower screen is always cloudy, or what terms like PFAS, fluoride, or microplastics actually mean in everyday homes.
This book tackles the most common, misunderstood, and rarely answered water concerns without sales pressure and without glossing over the details.
It’s not about fear. It’s about clarity and understanding.
For health-conscious families who want to make informed, thoughtful choices at home.

This book brings together the most relevant water quality topics for Australian homes into one clear, readable guide. No jargon. No overwhelm. Just practical context and clarity.
Yes. The book focuses on issues directly affecting Australian homes, using council and government sources, and tailored to our water systems and climate.
I work as an independent water quality educator and consultant. Also a member of the Australian Water Association. Over the years, I’ve spent considerable time researching, testing, and comparing different approaches to household water quality.
I’ve also seen firsthand how confusing and inconsistent the information can be for families who are genuinely trying to make informed decisions. This book is a result of that experience.
No. This book isn’t about promoting any particular brand or solution. It’s designed to help households understand what’s in their water so they can make informed decisions for themselves.
Different homes have different needs, budgets, and priorities. That’s why I encourage people to research, compare options, ask questions, and decide what feels right for them, if they choose to take any action at all.
I’m Sam Tornatore, a water quality educator and consultant, and a member of the Australian Water Association. For many years, my work has focused on helping people gain clarity and make better decisions through education rather than pressure.
Like many health-conscious households, I paid close attention to food quality, natural products, and what went into my body. When it came to water, I assumed that if it looked clear and tasted fine, and I had a basic filter at one tap, that was enough.
What changed for me was understanding how water is actually used in a home. Drinking is only one part of the picture. Water also comes into contact with the body through showering, washing, bathing, and everyday household use. In many cases, exposure through the skin and inhalation can be just as relevant as what’s consumed.
As I started reviewing publicly available information from councils, utilities, and government sources, it became clear that most households have very little awareness of what’s in their water beyond a general “it’s safe” message. The information is there, but it’s fragmented, technical, and rarely explained in a way that’s practical for everyday families.
What concerned me most wasn’t the existence of contaminants themselves, but how little clear, non-salesy guidance existed to help people understand what those reports actually mean for a whole home, not just a drinking tap.
That’s why I created this book. I don’t lead with products or one-tap solutions. I lead with education and context, so people can understand their water properly and decide, in their own time, what makes sense for their household.
If you’re serious about clean living and protecting your family, this is an important part of the picture to understand.
This book gives you clear, practical information so you can make confident decisions for your health and home.
